(He was quite funny about it: After the second miscue he said, “Let’s make this entire show about this song… and me!”) Deep cuts from John’s early albums, which bear the unmistakable rootsy influence of The Band, were rolled out by country stars Maren Morris (“Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters”) and Miranda Lambert (“My Father’s Gun”). Alessia Cara sang “I Guess That’s Why They Call It the Blues” with characteristic understated grace Lady Gaga donned some Elton-esque glasses for “Your Song.” Coldplay’s Chris Martin had to re-start “We All Fall in Love Sometimes” twice: once because “I f-ed it up!,” another time because the accompanying string section missed their cue.
Ed Sheeran sang a lovely, unusually fast-paced version of “Candle in the Wind.” Sam Smith performed a gentle “Daniel” accompanied by John’s longtime guitarist Davey Johnstone on electric guitar, rather than the electric piano familiar from the recorded version.
Miley Cyrus kicked things off by beginning “The Bitch Is Back” from an aisle in the middle of the crowd (we must admit we were transfixed by the sight of Sony/ATV exec Paul Williams clapping along in his seat, right next to Cyrus, at the start of the song). I felt the constant shots of the (very elderly/poor health) surviving Beach Boys cheering every performance was bordering on maudlin and dragged down the energy a lot.The show featured many memorable moments, not all of which are likely to be included in the broadcast version. The backstory on Warmth of the Sun was new to me and interesting. I really liked the Hanson one of Barbara Ann, and would’ve preferred to hear them do Surfer Girl (watch their performance of Bee Gees Too Much Heaven in Australia on Youtube). Ignoring the tracks I’d never heard before, the two Beck performances were off – was he a 1/4-1/2 beat ahead of the music all the way through Sloop John B? The Brandi Carlisle one sounded like an imitation of KD Lang and somehow didn’t work that well… And it would’ve been so much better if God Only Knows had included a bunch of singers… They did ok, better than some of the singers for sure, but maybe someone like him could have reined in or re-aligned some of it. Half expected to see someone like Ricky Minor leading the orchestra. I was excited to watch this, and ended up wishing it had been better. There were a few good performances, but many were less than exciting, a few were deep tracks that were…not well known.
